Monday, October, 27, 2008

At the Whirlpool Corporation Research & Engineering Center, Gale Horst has been leading studies and development in various energy management concepts in the appliance industry in response to utility industry needs and vision. The mission of his group is to identify where Whirlpool technologies can deliver energy management solutions through advanced electronic engineering technology. Gale has participated in U.S.

Department of Energy discussion groups and has presented his concepts at various other energy and utility industry conferences. He has delivered a number of working energy concept prototypes including a total home energy management system, a curtailable appliance prototype, and the Whirlpool residential energy monitoring system.

Mr. Horst initiated a concept utilized in the Pacific NW GridWise Demonstration Project whereby fairly simple messages relay energy managed objectives to a smart appliance. Mr. Horst led a team in development of the 150 clothes dryers able to interface with load management strategies as a grid reliability resource. His work continues to define consumer focused energy management concept that can allow any residential device to accept messages directly from the utility system either directly at the device, or via a home area network.
