Session 1: Technology Development and Clean Tech Investments
Monday, October, 27, 2008
Dr. Scott Elrod manages PARC's Hardware Systems Laboratory, which focuses on printing, microfluidic, energy and biomedical systems. Elrod was instrumental in launching PARC's cleantech research program, which focuses on delivering affordable solar electricity, clean air and water, and efficient energy distribution across multiple industries. One of the first results is a novel, low-cost solar concentrator technology (jointly developed with new venture SolFocus, Inc.) that will cut consumers' solar electricity costs by half.
Prior to his current role, Elrod directed the Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Division at SEMATECH, a consortium of semiconductor manufacturers, and co-wrote a chapter on the semiconductor industry's ESH performance.
Elrod received his A.B. degree in Physics from Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana (1981), and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University (1985). While at Stanford, he built the world's first low-temperature tunneling microscope.
